DVI2USB 3.0 lecture capture at Northwestern University

This case study describes how DVI2USB 3.0 video grabbers are used to capture, record and stream lectures from a permanently installed classroom computer, a presentation from a visiting lecturer’s laptop, or another video source such as a microscope, medical equipment or other display devices without requiring client side software to be installed.

Each classroom has a presentation computer and a capture computer. The presentation computer is a dual boot Mac Mini™ that gives the professors or lecturers the option of using MAC OS or Windows environment. With this computer, they can authenticate to the university network and bring up their presentation courseware from their file servers.
Inside the lectern or podium, there is a second Mac Mini with an attached DVI2USB 3.0. The DVI2USB 3.0 video grabber connects to the output of the presentation computer (VGA, DVI, HDMI, display port, etc.) with the appropriate cables or adapters or multi-source video switch.
Some classroom installations allow visiting lecturer’s to connect their laptops or other video sources directly to the MacMini capture computer. This architecture is perfect to address security issues as it prevents the visitor from accessing the university network and does not require any software to be installed on the presentation source. Simply connect to the video out from the visiting presenter’s display.

This architecture also allows presenters to show screens from iPads, iPhones, embedded systems for the Computer Science department, document cameras, microscope cameras, and medical equipment for the medical faculty.
The capture computer uses Telestream’s WireCast™ or ScreenFlow™ software to ingest the video stream from DVI2USB 3.0, then encode and stream it to Flash Servers that provide a live view of the class room lecture materials.
Capture in classrooms without dedicated capture system
Northwestern also uses Lecture Recorder x2 as a mobile lecture capture, recording and streaming system for classrooms that do not have a permanently installed lecture capture system.
